It’s been a big year in Digital. We’ve put together some interesting figures, statistics and percentages to mull over the Holidays and to take into consideration for your 2016 strategies!

In 2015, over 40% of the world’s population has an internet connection. In 1995 it was less than 1% – data from Internet Live Stats.

The above source also estimates that the number of live websites would exceed 1 billion sometime between late 2015 and mid-2016. In 1991 there was 1 website.

Google dominates the Search Engine market share (between 65%- 75% of the market – almost 80% on mobile), and it hasn’t changed much since 2008. Data from Search Engine Land here and here.

According to Internet Live Stats, Google processed over 40,000 search queries every second in 2015. That’s over 3.5 billion searches a day and 1.2 trillion searches per year worldwide! And up to 20% of those queries each day have never been asked before.

Adult internet users spent more time reading news online (0.74 hours) than they are on traditional printed forms of press (0.61 hours) in 2015, according to the Global Web Index.

Daily mobile usage on a global level rose to average over 2 hours a day in 2015. 16-24 year olds are online on their mobiles and smart-phones for 3.26 hours a day (up from 1.88 hours a day in 2012). Also reported by Global Web Index.

Facebook has 1.55 billion active monthly users worldwide, as per Statista.

83% of social media users have stated that they first learn about products and services on social platforms like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, according to PR Web.

40% of Facebook users turn to social media to research products prior to purchasing (but only 11% say that a ‘buy’ button on a social network would encourage them to purchase). Sourced from the Global Web Index.

YouTube has over a billion users. The number of people watching YouTube per day in 2015 was up 40% year on year since March 2014, and the hours of users watching videos on their mobile is up 100% (more than half of YouTube views!).

In September 2015, Instagram reported having 400 Million users. And there are more than 80 million photos shared per day.

Instagram ads only launched in September but Emarketer has forecasted that they will bring in $595 million in mobile ad revenue in 2015. They’re also predicting that Instragram ad revenue will overtake Facebook and Twitter by 2017!

30% of all online shopping purchases are now made on mobile phones, according to Google.

Google data also shows (reference above) that more online sales are made on Sundays than any other day of the week, and shopping related searches are 18% higher.
