We often have clients asking us; ‘I want to blog on my website, but I don’t know how to make the most or it’, or ‘I post blogs, are they effective?’. Regular blogging can help to improve rankings in Search Engines because they love new and fresh content, and they can help you to bring in more traffic to the site for ‘long tail’ phrases (more about this in Tip 1). To shed some light on a few ways that we recommend blogs be utilised, please see our 5 Top Tips!
Think about who and what you’re targeting
Before you create the blog think about:
- Who are you trying to target? – Is this blog being targeting to a specific segment of your target audience? If so, what kind of language should be used? How long should it be? How technical should it be? What kind of elements (such as images and or videos) should be included to grab their attention?
- Which search phrases would you like your blog to appear for on Google? – Statements and questions are good things to keep in mind when blogging because if a user asks a question, they’re often looking for an informational piece. We recommend including ‘long tail’ phrases. These are usually strings or 3 or more phrases that are more specific than a broad search term of 1 or 2 words. For example, ‘seo’ would be a broad search term and ‘how to utilise your blog for seo’ is a long-tail phrase. The person typing in ‘seo’ could be looking for the what SEO stands for or anything to do with SEO. The person searching for blog tips for SEO is going to see value in reading a blog with tips in it and hopefully click through to the site.
Link to other content on your site
Your blogs may naturally mention or refer to other parts of your website (other blogs, service/ product pages etc). It’s always advised to ‘internally link’ to those pages where possible. This not only helps user experience, but it shows Search Engine which is the hierarchical page for the phrase with the internal link on it. You will see examples of this throughout this blog! It’s also a good idea to link to other related content that’s relevant on other credible websites, especially if you’ve taken statistics or quotes from a particular source.
Include visuals and optimise them
Large slabs of text can be boring, so we always recommend adding images that are optimised or other media such as videos. These can also add relevancy to your writing with Search Engines and aid rankings.
Mark it up with Schema
Adding schema mark-ups to your blogs can help the stand out in search results and increase click-through rates. You can use schema to pull in information such as the publish date, author and an image.
