On the 17th of January, Google announced that as of July 2018 page loading speed will have an affect on mobile rankings. On the Webmaster Central blog, that this will be called the ‘Speed Update’ and will; ‘will only affect pages that deliver the slowest experience to users and will only affect a small percentage of queries. ‘
So the good news is that:
a) This update will only affect searches performed on mobile
b) It will only affect a small number of queries
and c) It’s being rolled out in July, giving webmasters a few months to prepare
So, how should I prepare?
Google recommends using tools like their PageSpeed Insights to diagnose page loading speed issues. It also breaks down the differences between desktop and mobile which is handy, as well as providing a list of items that can be fixed or improved.
Some of the items on there may need to be implemented by your developer, but if you have a WordPress site there are some helpful plugins that you can checkout.
- AMP for WordPress to setup AMP pages
- WP Smush IT for compressing images
