How to hire an SEO (Straight from Google’s mouth!)

If you’re looking to increase your websites ranking in Google, an SEO company, consultant or agency that claims to offer this service is usually your first point-of-call. In a first for the search engine, Google have launched a video (via the Webmasters blog) to help business owners, ‘hire a useful SEO and prevent hiring a bad SEO.’ Hosted by Maile Ohye, the Developer Programs Tech Lead at Google, it confirms a lot of things that we’ve been preaching for a while (such as meta keyword spamming gets you nowhere and buying links is bad!) and also gives tips finding the right SEO.

The video is roughly 11.30 minutes long and has lot’s of quotable quotes, such as, ‘an SEOs potential is only as high as the quality of your business or website’, and ‘SEOs need four months to a year to help your business first implement improvements and then see the potential benefit.’ Amen sister!

Her top tips for finding a useful SEO company include:

  • Checking references from other clients
  • Asking for technical and search audits
  • Making sure your meetings with them are two-way to ensure that they are genuinely interested on your business and your goals.
